This spoon was originally designed for Toulouse Lautrec, who has been noted as the inventor of the “Earthquake” or “Tremblement de Terre” cocktail (a very potent drink containing 3 parts Absinthe and 3 parts Cognac). It features the insignia of Lautrec's famous initials at the top of the grill, and with its great line definition makes it a very popular choice among absinthe collectors.
A traditional absinthe is prepared by pouring an ounce of absinthe into an absinthe glass, and then placing a perforated absinthe spoon (such as this one) on the rim of the glass with a cube of sugar set on top. You would then slowly pour ice cold water over the sugar cube, which in turn drips from the spoon into the glass of absinthe releasing oils and perfuming the air with fennel, grand wormwood and anise.
